Lydlynch Infant School

English

At our school, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme—a Department for Education-validated, systematic synthetic phonics approach designed to help every child learn to read with confidence.

What Little Wandle Means for Your Child

  • Daily Phonics Lessons: Children are taught to recognise letters and the sounds they make (grapheme-phoneme correspondences), blend them together to read words, and segment words to spell.
  • Reading Practice Sessions: Children apply their phonics skills in small-group reading sessions that focus on decoding, prosody (reading with expression), and comprehension.
  • Matched Decodable Books: The books children read are strictly matched to the phonic notes they have learned in class, ensuring they experience early success.
  • Catch-up and Support: Built-in assessments track every child’s progress so that quick, supportive "Keep-up" sessions are put in place immediately if a child needs extra help.

Supporting Reading at Home

You can support your child by listening to them read their decodable school book, practising their weekly sound/tricky word sheets, and visiting the Little Wandle For Parents Page for guidance videos and pronunciation help.
